The gallery based in Istanbul’s Çukurcuma district just opened a new project space in the ancient part of the city: Büyük Valide Han in Mahmutpaşa district. Constructed by the order of Kösem Valide Sultan in the 17th century, Büyük Valide Han is known as the biggest inn in Istanbul Hoping to establish an open space, Valide Han’s intended usage will include artist workshops and residency programs for artists creating space-specific works.

Blok wants to urge viewers to explore the inn with each project, and introduce new and in-depth points of view towards time and history. To achieve this, they hope to work with artists and researchers that can address the historical, sociological, and political complexity of Büyük Valide Han from various perspectives.

Sharjah Art Foundation announced the 2017 Sharjah Biennial Prize recipients on 10 March during the opening night of Sharjah Biennial 13: Tamawuj. The recipients of this year’s prize were İnci Eviner, Uriel Orlow, Dineo Seshee Bopape and Walid Siti. An honourary mention was awarded to the late artist Ali Jabri.

This year's biennial features two of Eviner's videos: Beuys Underground, a new work commissioned by the biennial, and Runaway Girls (2015).

İnci Eviner’s large body of work ranges from drawings and video to performative and collaborative practices. In her works, she explores politics of desire, space, subjectivity and its potentiality. As an artist, she is aware of the traumas we live with that demand a new kind of listening and witnessing. She follows the current practices of power on the female body and researches outside of the given identity that is in a continuous state of enactment.

The SB13 Prize jurors were Adriano Pedrosa, Artistic Director of Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, Brazil; N'Goné Fall, independent curator and cofounder of GawLab Collective Dakar and Dr Youssef Aidabi, Advisor at the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre for Gulf Studies.

The Sharjah Biennial Prize was established by Sharjah Biennial in 1993 and is now awarded by Sharjah Art Foundation. The honoured recipients are selected by a distinguished jury appointed by SAF. The Sharjah Biennial Prize is given upon the jury’s sole discretion and can be granted to any number of artists.

The 4th Istanbul Design Biennial will be held from 22 September until 4 November 2018. Curator Jan Boelen announced the concept and open call at a press meeting held on Thursday, 12 October at Salon İKSV.

Titled 'A School of Schools', the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial will stretch both the space and time of the traditional design event, manifesting as a flexible year-long programme within which to respond to global acceleration, generating alternative methodologies, outputs and forms of design and education. 'A School of Schools' manifests as a set of dynamic learning formats encouraging creative production, sustainable collaboration, and social connection. Exploring eight themes, the learning environment is a context of empowerment, reflection, sharing and engagement, providing reflexive responses to specific situations.

Can the biennial use, question and reframe previously tried-and-tested education models – from the museum-as-encyclopedia to the laboratory, the studio and the academy – to create a setting for meaningful dialogue and design? Can design itself be a brave space for people to share their knowledge and ignorance, their experience and curiosity?

Engaging multigenerational, transdisciplinary practitioners from Turkey and abroad, 'A School of Schools' brings together old and new knowledge, academic and amateur, professional and personal, focusing on the process as much as the outcomes. Together, agents in this complex and ambitious ecosystem will create new knowledge, search for alternatives to implemented systems, and with radical diversity, push the boundaries of the design discipline.

The open call, which ended on 15 December, was extended to all designers, architects, scientists, engineers, chefs, craftspeople, activists and everyone else, who would either like to propose or participate in a school or learning experiment.

For the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, Jan Boelen is teaming up with Vera Sacchetti as Associate Curator and Nadine Botha as Assistant Curator.

Following an open-call and a two-stage evaluation, İKSV, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, announced the project that will be exhibited at the Pavilion of Turkey at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia taking place from 26 May–25 November 2018.

Vardiya / The Shift, curated by Kerem Piker, will be presented at the Pavilion of Turkey at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia. Cansu Cürgen, Yelta Köm, Nizam Onur Sönmez, Yağız Söylev and Erdem Tüzün are assistant curators in the project.

The project proposes a spatial organisation for meeting, encountering and architectural production. Departing from the biennale’s theme 'Freespace', the Pavilion of Turkey welcomes architecture students, who will be hosted by İKSV in shifts, throughout the Biennale Architettura. Following an international open call, undergraduate and graduate students of architecture will be expected to visit the biennale, participate in the designated workshop programmes and contribute to architectural production with using various media. The exhibition content is expected to derive and flourish from this programme of workshops, performances and the participants’ individual contributions in situ, as well.

The exhibition programme of the pavilion is coordinated by İKSV, and realised under the co-sponsorship of Schüco Turkey and VitrA, and the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey. The Pavilion of Turkey opened at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia in 2014 for the first time, upon a 20-year allotment of the Arsenale with İKSV’s initiation and the contribution of 21 supporters.

The Selection Committee chose the project among the applications made in response to an open-call, after a series of evaluation meetings. The Committee’s members are Prof. Dr. Sibel Bozdoğan, Levent Çalıkoğlu, Prof. Dr. Arzu Erdem, Prof. Dr. Murat Güvenç, Yeşim Hatırlı, Prof. Dr. Süha Özkan and Prof. Dr. Uğur Tanyeli.

Further details regarding the Pavilion of Turkey at the 16th International Architecture Biennial in Venice will be announced later in 2018.

HOME IS WHERE THE (HE)ART IS


In the summer 2016, Gallery Paris Beijing invited Yann Perreau to curate the first solo exhibition of Turkish artist Mehmet Ali Uysal in France. The artist invested the space with a body of works, which, he explained, were created and assembled as an attempt to define a new home (“ev” in Turkish) for his oeuvre.

Following this gesture, from 1 February until 1 March, the gallery will exhibit works by a new generation of artists who live and work partly in Turkey, focusing on their relationship to that notion of “ev” under the title 'HOME IS WHERE THE (HE)ART IS'.

The participating artists have been exhibited around the world in the last few years, confirming the Istanbul art scene as one of the most interesting, innovative and dynamic of our time. Some of them have decided to move abroad recently. Others still live there, while most of them have now one foot here, and another one elsewhere. Hence, they have made of the world itself, in its complexity and diversity, their home. This exhibition doesn’t focus on the eternal themes of exile, diaspora or migrations and doesn’t reduce itself to 'Turkish artists', preferring to look at artists who live in Istanbul, whatever their nationality (a global city, Istanbul welcomes artists and creators from around the world, who consider it their home).

It starts from a proverb: “Home is where the heart is” and follows a philosophical and aesthetical – even if political too – approach: in our globalized world, is the traditional apprehension of home relevant anymore? Can home still define one and only one specific location? “Here, isn’t it elsewhere”, questions Gözde Ilkin in her poem 'Delirium for a poetry of space'. How can travels, displacements and shifting remodel one’s apprehension of home, one’s sense of belonging and – ultimately – one’s aesthetics? Home is sometimes left behind, voluntary or by necessity. Still it can be recreated elsewhere. What do we remember of our previous homes?

Ultimately, isn’t home that strange, mysterious, ephemeral feeling that art can sometimes help to define? Something personal, always changed, always re-imagined, like memory itself, or may be like a romance? This group exhibition looks at how these questions can materialise, take shape in various bodies of works. It will transform the gallery into a transitory, dwelling, utopic space. A “Here and elsewhere”, as Anne-Marie Miéville and Jean-Luc Godard defined it in their eponymous film.

Nevin Aladağ Wins Ernst Rietschel Art Prize

The artist Nevin Aladağ has been awarded the Ernst Rietschel Art Prize for Sculpture. Named in honor of the late German sculptor Ernst Rietschel, who died in 1861, the prize has been awarded by the Ernst Rietschel Kulturring every two years since 1991 and is endowed with 15,000 EUR. Aladağ’s work will be on display in an exhibition at the Albertinum in Dresden in March 2018.

Nevin Aladağ (b. 1972, Van) moved to Stuttgart, Germany with her family in 1973 and studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich until 2000. In her practice comprising sculpture, installation, video and performance, Aladağ detaches everyday objects from their original context to investigate their social, cultural and political codings, as well as origins and history. Aladağ lives and works in Berlin.

Aladağ’s installations, video works, and performances were shown at numerous international museums and biennials, including recent participations in Documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens and the 57th Venice Biennale. Her work was exhibited at: Kunsthalle Basel (2014-15); Art Space Pythagorion, Samos (2014); Istanbul Modern (2014); Sharjah Biennale (2013); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2012); Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) (2011); Haus der Kunst Munich (2011), The Hayward Gallery, London (2010); XIV Biennale Internazionale di Scultura, Carrara, (2010); Riso Museum, Catania and Palermo (2010); TBA 21, Vienna (2010); Biennale Cuvée, Linz (2009) and (2010); 11th Istanbul Biennial (2009); The Al-Mamal Foundation, Jerusalem (2009); OPEN ev+a, Limerick (2009), and 8th Taipei Biennial, Taiwan (2008).

The jury comprised critic Kirsty Bell; Matthias Mühling, director of the Lenbachhaus in Munich; Thomas Thiel, director of the Kunstverein Bielefeld; and Hilke Wagner, director of the Albertinum.

Erdal İnci's HD video 'Centipedes' will be exhibited as part of 'Midnight Moment', a programme running on electronic billboards at Times Square, New York every night, until 31 March. Midnight Moment is the world’s largest, longest-running digital art exhibition, synchronized on electronic billboards throughout Times Square nightly from 11:57pm to midnight. Presented by the Times Square Advertising Coalition and curated by Times Square Arts since 2012, it has an estimated annual viewership of 2.5 million.

Centipedes represents a departure in Inci’s work, focusing not on pre-planned movements, but on the natural, chance choreographies of life at Taksim Square in Istanbul, Turkey. In an aerial view, pedestrians and birds cross the Square according to their own particular motivations, completely unaware of the camera. The simple act of improvising a path through public space, an unconscious routine of city-dwellers and a subject of study amongst urban planners, comes into focus as each motion is cloned through temporal manipulation to repeat dozens of times. Individuals are multiplied into peculiar “centipedes” and popular paths are revealed as streams of movement. Though their paths sometimes intersect they never collide, appearing both real and surreal against the still or “photographic” background.

Erdal İnci is a multi-media artist, photographer and painter. He is primarily known as a GIF artist for an ongoing series in which he films himself performing pedestrian but whimsical actions (skipping, jumping, leaping, dramatically stumbling), often in public spaces, and almost always wearing an anonymizing black hoody. Inci edits the footage not just to loop in the full-circle fashion of any good GIF, but also to “clone” the figure within the frame, creating an endless stream of figures in a lockstep choreography. He is particularly interested in featuring busy urban public spaces - often with sociopolitical significance - because he believes they are amongst the most beautiful expressions of human achievement.

İnci’s chosen site for filming Centipedes resonates with the political life of Turkey and with the work’s exhibition in Times Square. In fact, Taksim Square is known as the “Turkish Times Square" – an iconic public space, transportation hub, tourist destination and site of annual New Year’s Eve and Pride celebrations and significant political demonstrations and incidents. The planned “Taksim Pedestrianization Project” – including the removal of Taksim Gezi Park, one of the few public green spaces in Istanbul, for the construction of military barracks and a shopping mall – sparked the broad “Occupy Gezi” movement in 2013 that led to the annulment of that plan, among other concessions from the Erdoğan administration. Centipedes documents the Square in 2015, at the center of life and debate in Istanbul.

Erdal İnci (b.1983, lives and works in Istanbul, Turkey) studied Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Hacettepe University, graduating in 2005. In 2012 he began turning his video works into GIFs posted to his blog erdalinci.tumblr.com. His GIF works have been featured in Zeit Online, CNN, Wired, The Creators Project, The Huffington Post, Canal + and Deutsche Welle. In 2016 he co-founded with Çağrı Taşkın and Serkan Kaptan the artist collective Oddviz, which focuses on the use of photogrammetry to create interactive 3D models and videos. He is also represented by Art On Gallery in Istanbul.

Tayfun Serttaş first guest of Cité des Arts for 2014

Tayfun Serttaş is participating in the art residency program at Cité International des Arts between January-March 2014. The selection of the artists who are invited to the residency program is made by a committee of seven with the coordination of IKSV and is conducted with an open call system. The residency program, which was developed by Çelenk Bafra and Banu Dicle from Simit Association will continue until 2029 without any interruption.

Visual artist, writer and researcher Tayfun Serttaş, born in 1982, lives in Istanbul and Bodrum. He graduated from the Istanbul University, Social Anthropology Department in 2004. He completed his masters at the Yıldız Technical University, Art and Design Faculty Interdisciplinary Art program in 2007 with a thesis titled “Photography And Minorities In Istanbul In The Context Of Modernism And Cultural Representation”. He participated in artist residency programs as AIF Residency Program, Arab Image Foundation, Beirut (2011), Accented Residency Program, The Delfina Foundation, London (2010), Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul (2009). Recent solo exhibitions include "Foto Galatasaray" FOAM, Amsterdam (2013), "Bazan" Pilevneli Project, İstanbul (2012), “Middle East Airlines” ArtSumer, İstanbul (2012), “Foto Galatasaray”, SALT Galata, İstanbul (2011), “ReMap 3”, Kalfayan Gallery, Athens (2011), “Souvenir Trauma” Zico House, Beirut (2011), “Tailor’s Dream M&M” Apartment Project, İstanbul (2011), “Studio Osep”, Delfina Foundation, London (2010). In November 2009 he published his first book, “Studio Osep”, and in November 2011 his second book titled “Galatasaray – Studio Practice by Maryam Şahinyan”.

Located in Paris, Cité Internationale des Arts gives 350 artists, whom it accommodates at the same time, the chance to stay at individually assigned workshops from two months to one year. With its exhibition halls, rehearsal studios, concert and performance venues, along with its various workshops, Cité des Arts gives the artists the opportunity to improve themselves and actively create.

From 27 March - 1 April Sotheby’s presents At The Crossroads 2: Contemporary Art from Istanbul to Kabul, an innovative selling-exhibition showcasing top-end contemporary works from the countries of the Caucasus, Central Asia, Turkey and Iran. Building on the success of 2013 exhibition At The Crossroads: Contemporary Art from Caucasus and Central Asia, the second installment will provide an alternative perspective on the context of art production in the region. Expanding the geographical reach to include art from Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan, the exhibition will explore complex cultural and social interconnections across the represented countries, from antiquity to today, and how these manifest themselves in contemporary visions and techniques.

The exhibition includes, among others, works by SARKIS, Hera Buyuktasciyan, Murat Akagunduz, Nil Yalter, Yuksel Arslan, Erol Akyavas, Fahrelnissa Zeid, Mehmet Guleryuz, Burhan Dogancay, Sena, Sakir Gockebag, Fatma Bucak and Sibel Horada.
